The screwbolt and the Baseball

Hi there, guys.
U've got a question for our American friends.

I can often see a picture of a screwbolt and a baseball in many american cartoons (see the attachment), but I dunno what it means. It is often showed when something stupid happens in the cartoon.

Could you please make it clear for me?

A screw and a baseball basically means "screwball," or one who is an idiot.

The second picture is calling someone a "ham." The term comes from the Old English "hom," meaning "crooked." It refers to the hock of an animal's back leg. But someone who is "crooked" could also be strange or weird (or sometimes a criminal.)

The other picture of an ear of corn is referring to someone as "corny." Anything that is corny is odd, or weird.

I came back from a good 2 years in Germany and it felt like Enigma the first month. That and American slang these days blows me out of the water.
