That means as much as "Better poor off than arm away"
(Better to have a bad time than to have lost an arm, and in German it rhymes well...because of this arm-Arm is written once big and once little, arm is poor and Arm is the arm )

I guess Mieko means that nouns in German are written with big letter, so arm and Arm could be translated diferently?
