The glowing ball of lights is in New York City, placed atop of a building that drops down in the last minute. By the time the ball reaches the bottom, it's the new year.

Here's a picture of it. I know they made a new one, but I don't know what year. This might be the current one. Not sure. :)

Maybe it was mantioned... I'm not watching TV:) And unfortunetly I don't know anything about US culture... :( But I'll do my best :)

So it is some kind of tradition... sounds funny. And everyone is watching the ball on december 31. hmmm. :)

The ball to me is just not that interesting. I do not know why we have it.

Maybe the Westminster clock should have a specific chime at midnight of New Year's Eve?

I guess someone thought of making a ball which will fall from a building on 31.12 and hit the ground on the 01.01. This "someone" made that tradition and now you have it ;-) Other explanation?

The Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball
The lighted Ball descends 77 feet in sixty seconds. The Ball is a geodesic sphere, six feet in diameter, weighing approximately 1,070 pounds. The Ball is covered with 504 Waterford crystal triangles which this year have been engraved with the names of those lost in the World Trade Center attacks, 696 multicolored light bulbs, 96 high intensity strobe lights, and 90 rotating pyramid mirrors.
That would assume that the ball drops faster than one foot per second! Weighing in more than half a ton, it is rather amazing at first... but when the "2005" lights lit up, I saw Jay leno kiss his wife, and the Blue Man Group ruined his set... I turned off the TV and went to bed disturbed. :p

But evetyone is happy at that night, coz we don't have to go to school next day:) And I think it's quite stupid: walking round the city at night... Celebrating: yes, it's cool, with friends and all, but we can do it at the day time... We're having party till 4 AM and there are people whos still drunk:) but i'm sleeping also!

New Year's isn't what it used to be for me. Birthdays are boring now.
